There are basically two common aspects of hypnosis, the therapeutic approach and stage hypnosis, which is the entertainment side of hypnosis.

Although science may frown upon stage hypnosis for trying to make fun of the process for entertainment or for profit, it has, in some way helped, in easing public perception of what hypnosis is really all about.

As long as the stage hypnotist does not abuse the ability to explore the minds of his subjects, a practitioner who is responsible enough to respect and give justice to hypnosis can do more good than harm.

Many hypnotherapists believe that a lot of reputable stage hypnotists were responsible for conditioning the minds of people, of course not through actual hypnosis itself, to embrace hypnosis as a form of therapy or treatment for common behavioral problems of man like alcohol and substance addition, especially smoking.

A lot of stage hypnosis acts commonly involve drunkards going through the stage act to emerge sober towards the end of the process, with some even undergoing altered states that will change their attitudes towards drinking.

Although the process of stage hypnosis itself is a bit disturbing at hindsight, but the fact remains that the power of the mind can truly be harnessed.

The fact that some stage hypnosis entertainers continue to promote their trade is on the fact that stage hypnosis allows them to earn big bucks, still people cannot judge them based on what they do.

As mentioned before, there are stage hypnosis entertainers who continue to give justice to the practice of hypnosis.

Whether it be for entertainment or therapy, stage hypnosis is as equally effective as it is used for therapy.

Many experts and stage hypnotists agree that training for entertainment needs no formal education required, as well as learning all of the applied techniques and approaches to stage hypnosis.

The same fact holds true for stage hypnosis, that 10% of the population are likely to submit to hypnosis, since not everyone is susceptible to such.

Stage hypnosis allows an entertainer to be more creative and imaginative, the reason why it has continued to captivate audiences time and again.

A stage hypnotist must remain true to some commitments that needs to be strictly adhered to, which is responsibility, accountability, integrity, honesty and respect confidentiality, since a stage hypnotist will be responsible for exploring the mind of a subject.

A stage hypnotist must also never try to make fun of subjects during the stage act.

Although entertainment is key, it must never take advantage of a subject that is in a hypnotic state, since it is expected that the stage hypnotist should basically focus on the fact that the basic aim of stage hypnosis for entertainment is to exhibit the capabilities of hypnosis and what it can do to benefit humankind.

If one is interested to try out stage hypnosis, he or she must carefully consider the amount of responsibility that comes along with it and the initial approach is to study the basics of hypnotism, especially with all recommended techniques and processes.

This should then be followed with a great deal of practice, concentration and experimentation, until such time the candidate is confident enough to perform in front of a group of people.

So try and make the most of the entertainment side of stage hypnosis and you can be on your way to having a great time with hypnosis.

Can hypnosis really change your life? Well the answer is different for each patient. You have to understand first what hypnosis can and cannot do as well understand what happens during the different stages of hypnosis.

Hypnosis has been around for years. Before any patient can receive treatment, the hypnotist has to know first why the patient wants to try it. If during the assessment the doctor realizes that other treatments have not worked and he or she is willing to try it, only then will this technique be performed on the patient.

The first stage of hypnosis is known as induction. Here, the hypnosis will narrow the patient's attention to the point wherein the sensory impressions are blocked out. This means that the only thing that the patient will hear or see is whatever the hypnotist is showing or saying.

When the patient is ready, it is time to go to the next stage called deepening. Here, the patient will get into the three main stages of hypnosis namely hynoidal, cataleptic and in some cases somnambulistic. Hynoidal is considered a light stage, cataleptic is a deeper state while somnambulistic is the deepest state.

Hypnoidal and cataleptic are effective in helping people improve themselves and change bad habits. The third is used when the patient requires major surgery and prefers not to be injected with anesthesia. This is also used by some for entertainment purposes.

The next level is known as utilization and this is the most important because it is here that patient will be able to achieve their desired goal.

To make this happen, the hypnotist leaves in the mind of the patient a posthypnotic suggestion. When this is triggered, the patient's behavior is affected. A good example is if the hypnotist has made the client believe that when he or she is in a stressful situation, that person will not have the urge to smoke a cigarette. This can also happen if the person feels depressed and loses the desire to drink. The key here is that the goal has to be clear and specific.

Before the hypnotist can even go to the utilization stage, they have to make sure the patient is ready to accept posthypnotic suggestions. They have to make sure that the patient's eyes or body does not move and that they are in a relaxed state. If this is not achieved, the hypnotist will not be able to help the patient get what they want after treatment.

Assuming that utilization was completed, this is when both the hypnotist and the patient proceeds to the last stage of hypnosis known as termination. Here, the person is slowly brought back to reality. A few examples of this includes counting backwards, giving an authoritative command like "wake up", or with a clap of the hand.

If the patient is receptive to the idea when the suggestion is made, repeating the suggestion or rewording it may be necessary. It is only when the patient is able to accept the suggestion that he or she will be able to formulate the internal process so the desired outcome can be achieved.

There are a lot of things that happen during the different stages of hypnosis. Preparation, implementation and monitoring are all essential so the patient gets the most out of the treatment.

Hypnotism is one option we have to solve a problem. You can go to a hypnotist and avail of their service or do this on your own. The big question is how do we induce the different stages of hypnotism?

The first stage of hypnosis is called preparation. In fact, you are already on your way when you consider hypnosis to solve your problem because you are convinced that you have something to gain from this technique even if there is no 100% guarantee that it will work.

But you have to remember that hypnosis can only work if you believe it can otherwise you are just wasting your time in seeking the help of a hypnotist.

The second stage of hypnosis is called induction. Here, you get to block everything around you and then focus your attention to the voice of the hypnotist or gaze into an object. Some patients lie down while others sit on a chair.

The hypnotist may also use music to help and for those who want to do this by themselves, there are CD's which they can buy and use in their own time.

The third stage of hypnosis is called the deepening and many experts say this is where the line between one stage and the next becomes blurry. This is because some patients in the second stage are ready to receive posthypnotic suggestion which should only happen during the fourth stage which is circulation.

Nevertheless, the hypnotist still needs to follow the steps in each of the five stages so later on, the patient will responded positively to the keywords which will alter a change in behavior.

The fifth and final stage of hypnosis is called termination. If the hypnotist feels that the patient is ready, he or she will get you out of the trance by clapping their hands, counting backwards or telling you to open your eyes.

You may not remember what happened during the session but when the time comes, you will feel something different about yourself and the behavior which was implanted in your subconscious will kick in and you will be able to do perform the proper response.

No one can say that hypnosis is successful after just one or two sessions. This is why you have to visit the specialist again for a few more to ensure that you will be able to achieve your desired goal.

People must remember that hypnosis is not the answer for every medical condition. Although it can help people give up smoking, alcohol or drugs, it does not have the same effect if you are suffering from cancer or some other form of terminal disease.

This means that you have to understand the limits of what hypnosis can achieve. While it is also effective in helping some people, there are also cases where this technique has not achieved any positive results.

If you have consulted a medical doctor and nothing seems to work, this is the time that you should only consider hypnosis. You may laugh at the idea given that modern medicine has changed rapidly through the years but what do you have to lose going to a clinic and asking for help?

The only thing that the doctor will ask before you go in is to keep an open mind because with the right attitude, it could just work as the hypnotist will guide you through the different stages of hypnosis.

For hundreds of years, hypnosis has been used in many societies from a range of therapeutic treatment to day-to-day occurrences of human life, even some with sinister yet unfounded stories of mind control and forced mental submission, but the mystery of hypnosis has continued to baffle millions all over the world.

Oftentimes used as a form of entertainment, stage hypnosis is one of today's most alluring and sought after attraction, but here are some facts of history to give you a clear picture about stage hypnosis.

To those inclined towards the mystical, mysterious and imaginative dimension, hypnosis is personified as the moustached, well-dressed conjurer or magic spells, that with a single gaze from his eyes or dangling a pocket watch in front of one's eyes, will cause people to assume a trance-like state and submit to his every bidding.

But in the real world, hypnosis and hypnotism have been used primarily as a form of treatment rather than a tool for conquering the world.

The mystical picture of hypnosis, as mentioned earlier, is but a stuff of legend and will not likely be used as a secret weapon for the domination of mankind.

Still, hypnosis is a mystery that have been argued and pondered over by people for the past two hundred years and science is yet to fully explain how hypnosis really works.

Science is still to put together the pieces in the puzzle of the phenomenon of hypnosis, since it is as enigmatic as the mystery of the human mind.

It is believed that man is only able to use a tenth of his brain and the effect of hypnotism, experts agreed, can be a step further in making use of a part of that 90% of that unexplored dimension of the human mind.

There is no definite answer or explanation as to how hypnosis really works, but several schools of though nave been able to utilize the power of hypnosis for therapeutic treatment, mental conditioning and psychiatric treatment, among others.

Generally, hypnosis is getting into a trance-like state where a subject goes through a state of physical and mental relaxation, extreme suggestibility, increased imagination and heightened attentiveness.

The hypnotized subject is actually not asleep, contrary to popular belief, but is even extra alert all throughout the hypnotic state.

Hypnotism is somewhat akin to daydreaming, where it is similar as to someone fully engrossed in a movie, book or even in a moment of relaxation where the person gets catapulted to an 'imaginary' frame of mind like playing a role in a movie or character in a book and 'getting a feel' or immersing one's self into the story.

Hypnotism expert Milton Erickson believes that people get into a state of self hypnosis everyday, but are not aware or conscious about it.

Erickson said that it may be so since hypnotic states occur in stages and varying degrees, to which these daily self-hypnotic states are merely the 'milder' level, such as getting into a state of daydreaming and mental abandon, where one focuses on something such as work or an activity where every other environmental or surrounding stimuli gets shut off from one's sphere of thought.

Hypnotism became a scientific concept in the latter part of 1700, when an Austrian doctor named Franz Anton Mesmer theorized that hypnosis is a 'mystical force' calling it animal magnetism that flows from the hypnotist on to the subject.

This gave rise to critical studies on how hypnosis actually works and these gave rise to the therapeutic and treatment potential of hypnosis for a varied number of illnesses and health, especially entertainment.

Still, scientific concepts into hypnosis is only the tip of the iceberg and studies are still ongoing to further dissect the concept and science of hypnotism and the mystery of hypnosis will continue to fuel the quest to find answers.

So by now you know fact from fiction and gives a clearer picture about the mystery of stage hypnosis.

The truth behind stage hypnosis is more than just what many people see in movies and story plots written in novels or stage plays.

Hypnosis has indeed unlocked many secrets behind the mystery that is the human mind.

Many people believe that stage hypnotists possess mysterious mystical powers that allow them to control the human mind and have subjects do their every bidding.

The truth actually is that the 'power' rests with the subject being hypnotized rather than the stage hypnotist.

Point being that the hypnotist only serves as a guide or an instrument that causes the subject to 'produce' the hypnotic state, since the state of mind of the person being hypnotized rests solely on the person himself, which makes it possible for him to be hypnotized.

The fact that self-hypnosis can be done proves the fact that even if a person is in a hypnotic state, he can, at any time and as he wills it, can break off a hypnotic state.

Contrary to popular belief that hypnotism can control people, causing people to lose independent will and submit totally to the hypnotist.

This misconception of stage hypnosis is more of a storyline for scriptwriters or stage hypnotists, but in reality, if a subject is guided by the hypnotist to do something extraordinary, something dangerous or something that could be construed as something different from the subject's state of mind, the subject can only either become fully alert and break off from the hypnotic state or simply ignore the hypnotist's suggestion.

The belief that stage hypnosis is a supernatural, unusual or a strange state is not true, since man is unconsciously subjected to a similar state everyday of our lives.

These day to day situations similar to a hypnotic state, albeit on different and varying degrees, are day dreaming, imagining ones self with characters in a television show or movie, getting immersed with characters and storylines in a book or when taking long drives that somewhat gets the driver to a state of 'highway hypnosis'.

There are people who claim that a person who goes through stage hypnotism forgets the entire episode, however, people actually do remember everything that happened while they were going through hypnosis.

There are people who may not be able to recall what happened right away due to a suggestion by the hypnotist that they will not be able to recall, but will eventually remember the whole episode at one time or another.

The memory, upon the suggestion of the hypnotist, will temporarily reside in the part of the conscious mind where it cannot be accessed for a while, but the memory will be recalled eventually when subject to the right stimuli causing the subject to remember the hypnotic episode.

Surely, stage hypnosis cannot give a person extra abilities, despite verbal suggestions by the hypnotist.

This is mainly so since the only abilities people can do are those that are limited within the boundaries or the possibilities that the human mind can achieve, not supernatural or mystical powers.

When stage hypnotists, usually for entertainment, allow a subject to have 'extrasensory' abilities by correctly guessing game card numbers through random selection, it is so because such feats can be achieved by the human brain through heightened concentration and mathematical calculations operating in the subconscious mind.

These are but some of the common yet unfallible truths behind stage hypnosis that will dispel any of its sinister and dark reputation.

What is the most important stage in hypnosis? Some people say that utilization is the most important because after preparing the patient, this is where the hypnotist will impart the hypnotic suggestions that will make you person change your behavior once this is triggered.

Utilization is the third of five levels in hypnosis. The others are preparation, induction, deepening and termination that will be explained further later on.

For hypnosis to be effective, the posthypnotic suggestion must be both clear and specific. It can be something verbal or visual so when you see or hear it, you will be able to behave accordingly which again is what the objective of hypnosis is.

But before we can go there, we have to remember that you have to be prepared for the hypnotic session. The hypnotist has to be sure you are up to this kind of therapy otherwise both of you are just wasting your time and you are wasting your money.

The hypnotist will ask you a series of questions and then analyze how far you are willing to go with it. If he or she sees that you are serious, this is when both of you will proceed to the next stage of hypnosis known as the induction.

During the induction, you will be instructed to relax and block everything out. The objective here is to focus all your attention only to the hypnotist.

When this has been achieved, we go to the next level known as the deepening. From the word itself, you go into a deeper state to make you more receptive to the posthypnotic suggestions that will be given during the utilization.

If by chance you make any sudden movement during the deepening, the hypnotist has to start over because this is a sign that the hypnotic suggestion does not work.

To do that, the hypnotist may have to use the same words over again or use a different word. We can only tell if hypnosis was a success later on when you leave the clinic after the hypnotist performs the last level of hypnosis called termination.

In termination, you are brought back to reality. This is done by counting backwards, a clap of a hand or an authoritative command. When you wake up, you are aware of what happened and only time will tell if you are able to achieve your desired goal.

Since the results of hypnosis cannot be considered a success after one session, you will have to come back and undergo subsequent sessions. In most cases, the desired effects may only take place a few days or even several weeks later whenever that situation presents itself.

Remember that the hypnosis session does not change who you are as a person but only certain aspects of your behavior. You know for a fact that the hypnotist who will handle your case will do their best to make this happen so you have to do your share by being open to the idea that this could work in order for you participate actively during the session.

Hypnosis is one way to achieve a desired outcome if nothing else seems to work. The different stages of hypnosis especially utilization are important so you will be able to react accordingly when the session is over.

Hypnosis has indeed unlocked many secrets behind the mystery that is the human mind and there are indeed several stages one must be aware of.

Although many people believe that hypnotists possess mysterious powers that allow them to a control subject and have them do their every bidding, but the truth is that a person has every means to break off from that hypnotic state.

There are many and varied hypnosis programs and processes, but almost all follow a similar pattern.

Hypnosis is generally broken down into three stages, which for therapeutic purposes, is the are the most common ones adopted for therapies and treatments to a number of problems from breaking the smoking habit, pain and anger management, even alcohol and substance abuse.

The initial or first stage is known as the superficial trance, which is characterized as the lightest stage of hypnosis where a subject is still consciously aware of his surroundings and environment.

This is the stage which is most often used to treat patients with behaviors that need to be corrected like smoking and addiction.

The subject, during this stage, can accept suggestions relayed by the hypnotist, but the subject has the freedom to accept it or not.

The next stage is considered as the alpha stage, which is a deeper level of hypnosis, most often used to control or treat pain.

This is the stage when a deeper relaxation is achieved and breathing begins to slow down and the heart pressure and rate also follows suit.

The last and third stage is the deepest among the hypnotic stages and is often used by psychiatrists to go deeper and access the innermost thoughts where memories of past events and forgotten emotions are stored in the subconscious mind.

This is the most helpful process where psychiatrists are able to treat patients with severe psychological trauma.

If one would try out hypnosis as therapy or treatment, here are some tips to consider before considering hypnotism.

First, make sure to get hold of a reputable and licensed hypnotherapist, who are authorized to conduct treatments and therapies using the process, since there are a large number of fly-by-night and unlicensed practitioners plying the trade who could cause more harm than good.

So better watch out for these unscrupulous individuals or parties.

Make sure to check out credentials and don't be afraid to ask for details or information regarding their practice, since you will be placing your full confidence and turst in them when they try to explore into your mind.

Do take note that hypnosis may not work for everyone, especially with those individuals who are skeptical or do not subscribe to the idea of hypnotism.

Hypnotism is a state of mind and mental conditioning and if somebody is not decided or determined to place full confidence in the practice, it is likely that hypnosis will not have an effect on him.

If a person who wants to go through hypnosis but may be suffering from a psychiatric condition or taking medication for a psychiatric problem, he or she must not go through the hypnosis process without seeking for permission or approval from his or her psychiatrist.

Hypnotism is a critical and delicate process, which must be handled carefully by a licensed and experienced practitioner.

And now that you are aware of the various stages of hypnosis, you may be able to find out which one is best suited for a particular condition.

Hypnosis has been used to treat various problems. In fact, there are three stages of hypnosis and the hypnotist will try one or another to help you.

The first stage of hypnosis is known as a light or lethargic hypnotic sleep. The hypnotist will tell you to relax and make you visualize events that could either be in the past or the future. A good example of this is when athletes are told to imagine winning in an upcoming competition.

The second stage is called medium or hallucinatory state where just like the first, the hypnotist will tell the patient to remember past events and then forget about it. This can also be used to help someone give up an addition like alcohol or drugs.

The third stage is when a person falls into a deep or somnambulistic state. This means that the person has fallen into a deep spell and he or she will do anything that is instructed by the hypnotist. There are three levels here and the first two will make the patient do things that they won't even remember when they wake up. The third level is only used when the person has to undergo surgery without the use of anesthesia.

Unlike the first 2 stages of hypnosis, the third is rarely used as treatment. This is used for entertainment and a classic example is making a person act like a chicken.

You might be wondering how the hypnotist will know what to use to help the patient. The truth is, they don't until they are able to meet the patient for the first and establish a rapport with them. You have to remember that hypnosis does not work with everyone which is why it is important to assess the person's receptiveness to this type of treatment.

One way to determine that is to ask the patient some simple questions such as;

Why do you want to try hypnotherapy?

What do you hope to achieve?

Have you consulted other health professionals regarding your problem?

What was the outcome?

From there, the hypnotist will now begin the process of introducing the patient to hypnosis by beginning the induction. This is done in a quiet room and different words or cues are used to get the patient into the mood. Sometimes, music is also played in the background.

You have to remember that this does not yet mean that the client will become receptive to hypnosis. Most of the time, first timers are not comfortable with it yet which is why during the session, the patient may yawn, frown or make movements using either the hand or the feet.

This does not mean that hypnosis may not help the patient because there are other techniques that the hypnotist can use to maximize this form of treatment.

Will hypnosis work on everyone? The answer is no. Studies have shown that people with an IQ level below 70, those who have difficult concentrating and are skeptic about this form of treatment will not be able to experience the same effect as those who are far more intelligent and open minded.

So, if you are one of those that are not that smart and don't believe that this can work, you better find some other form of treatment for your problem because knowing what the three stages of hypnosis will not make any difference.

The way hypnosis works was a mystery that remain locked in obscurity for hundreds of years until today and the methods of stage, individual and group hypnosis have significantly improved over the years.

Regardless of whether it is for stage, individual or group hypnosis, the principles and methods remain the same and only happens to vary in use.

Researchers have discovered the key to what was considered a mental phenomenon that unlocked the wonders of hypnosis and opened new doors for many medical fields, including therapy and psychology, as well as for entertainment.

One of the recent studies on hypnosis revealed that researchers discovered several differences in physical body signs that were compared from those that are in a state of hypnosis and those that are not, particularly in dismissing some of the long held myths of mysticism and 'supernatural' nature of hypnosis.

Generally, those researchers claimed that they have not seen any significant change that can be associated with the state of hypnosis.

During the trance-like state of hypnosis, respiration and heart rate slows down, but not because of the hypnotic state per se, but because of the fact respiration and heart rate slows down as a result of deep relaxation.

However, the findings revealed that there is indeed a change in the activity of the human brain, especially when the subject is in a hypnotic state.

Electroencelaphograph or EEG tests, revealed that the brain produces different brain waves and patterns of electrical charges, which varies in subjects that are in the waking or sleep state.

EEG's measure electrical activity in the brain and the tests conducted noted that deep sleep – the state induced by hypnosis – produces different rhythms to that of dreaming.

But truth be told, hypnosis is not as sinister as it looks, where a hypnotist can simply take control of a subject's mind and has the freedom to dictate upon the subject to do his every bidding.

Here are facts that dispel that belief, that the subject must be willing to get hypnotized, that he must feel comfortable and relaxed by placing full confidence in the act of hypnosis and that he believes he can be hypnotized.

With these three basic concerns and preparations in mind, the hypnotist can then proceed with the act of hypnotism using any of the three most common ways to induce the hypnotic state.

The most common among all hypnosis methods is the eye fixation method, which is also called fixed gaze induction, which is one often seen in movies, like when a hypnotist waves a pendant or a watch in front of a subject.

This concept is based on the assumption that since there are a lot of stimuli surrounding a subject at any given time, fixed gaze induction cause the subject to focus on the item until complete and total focus is fixed towards the item.

The hypnotist guides the subject with verbal and audible cues in a low tone and inducing the relaxation state.

Another method is the rapid method, the concept of which is to aggressively induce a hypnotic with sudden and firm verbal commands.

It is believed that if a hypnotist is forceful enough, the subject submits his conscious state over to the situation presented by the hypnotist.

Another method is progressive relaxation and imagery, which is the one most commonly used in the medical profession, especially by psychiatrists employing hypnosis as a form of therapy and treatment.

Lastly, there is the balance method, where this method makes use of slow and rhythmic rocking which causes loss of equilibrium.

These methods, as mentioned before, are some of the most common and effective methods of inducing a subject into a deep sleep or a hypnotic state, which are most commonly used today for medical and therapeutic reasons rather than as a tool to control minds for sinister means.

The methods of stage, individual or group hypnosis may be varied, but the processes and effects are basically the same.

Hypnosis is all in the mind. While some people can be hypnotized easily, there are those who can't. If you want to achieve a desired goal, the hypnotist you get in touch with should be able to know when to move from one stage of hypnosis to the next.

To do that, they have to follow certain procedures and the first stage of hypnosis is preparation. Hypnotists don't go around looking for people who want to by hypnotized. You look for them so they are just waiting for you to knock on the door and ask for their help.

Even before you knock on the doctor's door, you are already working your way to the first stage of hypnosis called preparation which will get you ready for what is about to happen next.

Aside from preparing yourself mentally, the hypnotist will conduct an interview to find out what the problem is and what steps have you taken in the past. If they have practiced hypnosis for years, they can use their experience to develop a solution.

What makes hypnosis unique is the patient. A technique used for one patient will not always work for another and that is the challenging part of treating someone who has a problem.

If the hypnotist feels that this technique can work, this is the only time that the two of you will move on to the second stage called induction.

After the hypnotist makes sure you are comfortable, it is time to put you into focus and all your attention will be on the specialist. They can do this through fixed gazing or by telling you to close your eyes and listen to their voice.

The hypnotist can tell if you are hypnotized if you are able to sit or lie still for a long period of time without fidgeting. Another test is for the hypnotist to instruct the patient to move their arms and if they are unable to do so, then you are ready to go into the third stage known as the deepening.

Here, the hypnotist continues on with the trance making sure that patient is ready for the fourth and most critical stage of hypnosis known as circulation.

Circulation is so important because this is where the hypnotist will impart hypnotic suggestions to the subconscious of the patient. In some cases, the patient will not even remember what that word is and the only time it will come out is when it is triggered by a certain event.

It should be noted however that such a feat may not happen in one session and the change in behavior may happen after several days or even weeks. To make sure this sticks in the mind of the patient, they will have go back to the clinic for several sessions.

The end of a session is the fifth stage of hypnosis known as termination. The hypnotist may count backwards, tell you to open your eyes or clap their hands.

The amazing thing about hypnosis is that you don't always have to fall into a deep sleep because it also works as you are able to hear everything that that hypnotist said while you were in a trance.

While your willpower to achieve your desired goal is effective to make hypnosis work, the same goes for the hypnotist because they must also have the same will power to change your behavior by knowing when to move from one stage to next of hypnosis.
